Back Where They Started
Cubs Lose Offense, Game, Series, Dignity

The day after an electrifying win, the Cubs reverted to form and lost yesterday, 4-3 — and thus the series — to the awful Astros. Ted Lilly struck out six and gave up one run in 7 1/3 innings of work. Alas, the offense couldn't bring home a run with a GPS and stranded a whopping 16 runners. The game went into extras tied at 1-1, then Houston scored three in the 12th. Geovany Soto made it close with a two-run homer but Tyler Colvin (0-for-6) flew out to end it. Blech.

Yes, Ryno/No, Ryno
Different Thoughts on Sandberg as Next Skipper
Clearly, Ryne Sandberg wants to be the Cubs' next manager. The Trib's Phil Rogers declares Sandberg "the obvious choice," while another Trib puff piece profile says Sandberg has paid his dues and is "not just a manager, he's a teacher." But Goat Riders of the Apocalypse is not a fan, noting Sandberg's record is 253-258 and that his philosophy "sounds amazingly similar to the one espoused by Dusty Baker while he was in Chicago." Where do you stand on Ryno?

What the Hendry Move Says about 2011
We've read many predictions about the Cubs: Derrek Lee is heading west. Ted Lilly is heading east. And so on. The blog And Counting has seriously analyzed the Piniella/Hendry moves, and came up with some convincing theories. For starters, Jim Hendry is on thin ice. "If the Cubs don't legitimately compete and succeed in 2011, Hendry will be out of a job," the blog theorizes. "Success" for this season is based on how many big salaries the team can dump. Lastly, the blog predicts the next Cubs manager will be....

Story Time
What We Talk About When We Talk About Lou
What do we really know about Lou Piniella? We know he used to be a hothead. We know he likes to fish and probably won't refuse a frothy beverage. And thanks to a pair of stories out there, we know Piniella is pretty loose after the game. To wit: Both articles involve Lou's... ummm... junk. His goods. His meat and two veg. In the SI story, Lou is at the urinal... and, ummm... in the other from Deadspin, an underwear-clad Piniella... OK, we can't do them justice. Just read the stories.

All in the Family
A Look at the Clan that Owns the Cubs
We all know Tom Ricketts met his future wife in the bleachers. But did you know Pete Ricketts spent $12 million running for a Nebraska U.S. Senate seat and lost by 28 points? Did you know Todd Ricketts often trades the family's front-row tickets for some lucky fan's nosebleed seats, just for kicks? Did you know sister Laura has some interesting thoughts about other sports owners? "I might be the most visible or the first openly gay owner, but I don't think I'm the first gay owner," she said. Now you do.
University of Chicago Magazine: Here's the pitch

Carlos Silva's next start has been moved to Monday... To commemorate Andre Dawson's entrance into the Hall of Fame on Sunday, Comcast SportsNet is broadcasting a classic Cubs game from 1987 Friday at 7pm.

"Here's how I feel about Jim Hendry staying on as GM: I feel like I got divorced from my wife and she still lives with me."
