Wells Deals the Cards a Bad Hand in 5-0 Win
Jerry Lai/US PRESSWIRE
Randy Wells likely had the worst game of his career against the Cardinals in May, when he didn't retire a hitter and allowed five earned runs. Yesterday, he turned the tables on the Cards and threw seven innings of shutout ball, holding them to five hits and whiffing seven. Tyler Colvin jacked a homer to start the game and Geovany Soto and Alfonso Soriano also hit taters later. The Cubs pounded out 10 hits and picked up a game on the first-place Cards. Only 10 more to go!

Andre D'Awesome
The Hawk Goes to Cooperstown
Andre Dawson will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Sunday as a Montreal Expo, but The Hawk made a name for himself with the Cubs. Several laudatory stories have interesting facts about Dawson, including the fact that he wanted to play for the Cubs so badly in 1987 that he literally signed a blank contract and told the team to fill in the salary. The Cubs wrote $500,000, which was $700,000 less than he'd earned with the Expos. That year, he was named NL MVP for the last-place Cubs. Congrats, Andre.

Ryne's Song
The Case for Sandberg as Manager
Many Cub fans want Ryne Sandberg to manage the Cubs in 2011, but sometimes the reasons are more sentimental than baseball-related. Bleed Cubbie Blue makes a strong objective case for why the Hall of Famer should get the job. Did you know Sandberg has coached more games than Mike Scioscia, Ozzie Guillen, and Joe Girardi did before they became managers? There are some downsides to Sandberg's style, such as a lack of interest in stats. But the blog definitely makes strong arguments for why he should take over. Interesting.

What Will Cubs Look Like in 2011?
Some Cubs fans are still hoping for a miraculous comeback this season, but View from the Bleachers is already looking ahead to the post-Lou era. Other than Starlin "Señor Presidente" Castro, the infield could be totally new next year. There are plenty of questions elsewhere, too: Will Fukudome get traded, or head back to Japan in disgrace? Could Marlon Byrd be dealt next week? (Say it ain't so!) Looks like there may be a lot of youngsters on the team next year, and maybe that's not such a bad thing.

Mustache Power
Bob Brenly's Son Looking Good
When Michael Brenly was drafted in the 36th round in 2008, it was widely considered a favor to his dad, Cubs broadcaster Bob Brenly. And for the first two years, he played like a product of nepotism: he hit a middling .282 with a mere five home runs. But this year at Single-A Daytona, Brenly is hitting .305 with four home runs and a solid .363 OBP. Not only that, he had a 20-game hitting streak until Thursday. If he keeps this up, he could finally silence all the doubters. A mustache might help, too.

Jeff Stevens was sent to Iowa and Brian Schlitter was activated from the DL... A father and son are battling each other in court over four Cubs tickets... A scout watching Carlos Zambrano pitch in Iowa said "He looked like a sixth-inning middle reliever."

"Lou Piniella should be in the Hall of Fame because we need another guy in the Hall of Fame who made Cubs fans (mostly) happy but won't go in as a Cub."
