The Young and the Fearless
Rookies Hold Off Cards for 6-5 Win
Jerry Lai/US PRESSWIRE
Talk about starting with a bang: Tyler Colvin led off the game with a homer for the second consecutive day. Fellow rookie and top-of-the-order buddy Starlin Castro pitched in with three hits, including a two-run homer (his first at Wrigley Field). Andrew Cashner and Carlos Marmol closed it out for Tom Gorzelanny, who went six respectable innings and earned his sixth win of the season. The Cubs have gained two games in two days and are now nine back of the Reds and Cardinals. We're not saying they're in it, but it is nice, huh?

Andre the Giant Killer
Little-Known Facts About Andre Dawson
Back in the day, Andre Dawson was definitely one of baseball's most intimidating players. Lou Piniella would know: in 1990, he intentionally walked Dawson five times in one game. But as Dawson is inducted into Cooperstown today, we learn he has humble roots and wasn't drafted until the 11th round. We also find out how he got the nickname "The Hawk" and why he left Montreal. And even though Dawson was famous for his offensive prowess, he's proudest of his eight Gold Gloves. Maybe he can give Soriano a few tips.

The Kids Are Alright
Youngsters Powering Cubs' Streak
Earlier this season, Aramis Ramirez was getting booed, fans were cursing Alfonso Soriano's contract, and everyone was praying for the real Derrek Lee to please stand up. Now the Cubs are on a little bit of a roll largely due to the kids: Starlin Castro is batting over .300, Tyler Colvin is second on the team in homers with 15, and Andrew Cashner is hitting triple digits on the radar gun. Maybe we're foolish, but we can't help but feel a little optimistic. Are we being naive here?

Too Legit to Quit
Should Cubs Punt on Season?
After taking the first two games against the Cardinals, the Cubs are feeling better about making a run. "If we play good this weekend, we have a chance," Soriano says. But with the trading deadline only a week away, GM Jim Hendry is in an awkward spot: does he trade away veterans with value (Marlon Byrd and Ted Lilly) to stock up on prospects? Or should he keep them — risking losing players like Lilly for nothing — and just go for it? Mr. Hendry, you are on the clock....

Got Wilken?
Interview with Scouting Director Tim Wilken
When you're the guy who drafted studs like Chris Carpenter and Vernon Wells, you'd think people would trust you. But Cub fans are still trying to figure out whether scouting director Tim Wilken is a Warren Buffett at picking players or a Bernie Madoff. Wilken has made some controversial choices (i.e., this year's first-round pick Hayden Simpson), but he also tabbed Tyler Colvin and Andrew Cashner. Wilken typically goes middle-of-the-field players because "a lot of those guys in the middle can end up playing other places for your club," he says. So far, so good....
