Rocky Mountain Low
Comeback Fizzles, Cubs Swept by Rockies
Andrew Carpenean/US PRESSWIRE
OK, good news first: Newcomer Blake DeWitt went 3-4 with a RBI double in his Cubs' debut, and Alfonso Soriano homered and might have had another if it hadn't been for that meddling centerfielder Dexter Fowler. Now the bad news. Carlos Silva lasted four batters before an abnormal heartbeat forced him to leave, and the Cubs lost 8-7 to get swept by the Rockies. Carlos Zambrano gave up two runs in two innings, and Cubs pitchers walked seven and hit another. Worse, five of those runners scored. Yeesh. Bottom line: losing streak is now at five games.

Total Eclipse of the Heart
Silva's Ticker Sends Him from Game in First Inning
It wasn't the realization that he's becoming a disappointment that sent Carlos Silva from the game in the bottom of the first yesterday. It was paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PVST), essentially an abnormal heart rate. Silva had trouble catching his breath on the mound, but wanted to stay in the game. That's when catcher Geovany Soto advised him, "You've got to take care of that. It's the ticker." Silva was taken to a local hospital, where he was kept overnight. That's OK, Carlos. This year's team has done a lot of damage to our heart, too.

And Then There Were None
Guess How Many Cubs Make Top Prospect List?
With the strong showings of Tyler Colvin and Starlin Castro (and Andrew Cashner until recently), we were pretty excited about the Cubs' farm system. So when ESPN's Bill Simmons linked to Baseball America's top 50 prospects, we were psyched to see all the Cubs there. Oops. There weren't any. Seriously? No one? We started having flashbacks to all the sure things we heard about for so long — Brooks Kieschnick, Hee Seop Choi, Felix Pie, etc... — who didn't do jack for the Cubs. Let's just assume that Baseball America is wrong.

Who's Got Next?
Cubs' Manager in 2011 Has a Tough Hill to Climb
Here's the $64,000 question facing the Cubs: Who is going to be the team's manager next year? Several people want the job, but FOX Sports says they should be careful for what they wish for. Many well-regarded managers, such as Don Baylor, Dusty Baker, and Lou Piniella, came here thinking they'd be the one to fix things. Each of them was wrong. Calling it a "managerial graveyard," the article quotes several former Cubs managers who can't quite figure why it didn't work for them. Hey, the past is the past. Next year, it all changes... right?

Future Imperfect
What the Ted Lilly Trade Means for Upcoming Seasons
You might have thought the Ted Lilly/Ryan Theriot trade was just a way to shed some salary. Apparently not. Another Cubs Blog and Goat Riders of the Apocalypse look far down the line and see several new developments. The former blog sees New Kid on the Block Blake DeWitt as the starting third baseman, with Aramis Ramirez at first base (huh?). The latter envisions Starlin Castro at third (what the...?!?!), phenom prospect Hak-Ju Lee at shortstop, and DeWitt holding down second. So crazy it just might work? Or maybe just crazy.

Goat Riders of the Apocalypse: So how'd the Cubs do?

Aramis Ramirez missed yesterday's game with pain in his thumb... The New York Yankees will play at Wrigley Field next year... Kyle Smit, one of the players received in the Lilly/Theriot trade, won his debut with the Double-A Tennessee Smokies last night.
