Coleman a Cool Customer
Rookie Grounds Cardinals with 7-3 Win
Rob Grabowski/US PRESSWIRE
So it seems the Cubs might have found one of their starters for next year. Rookie Casey Coleman let in three Cardinal runs in the first three innings, then shut 'em down until he left in the seventh. With the win, Coleman improved to 3-1 with a 3.68 in his last six starts. Meanwhile, the Cubs knocked out stud Chris Carpenter in the fourth, as Blake DeWitt, Aramis Ramirez, and wee Sam Fuld all had two RBIs in the game. The best part: The loss dimmed the Cardinals' already-feeble playoff chances. Our deepest sympathy, Cards fans.

Brenly Says 'No Thanks' to Interview for Manager Job
So this was a bit of a surprise: Cubs' announcer Bob Brenly pulled out of the managerial sweepstakes. "For personal and professional reasons, this is not the right time for me," said Brenly, who won the 2001 World Series with Arizona (and was sporting his ring at the park yesterday — subtle). He also said he'd be open to other managerial opportunities. So why did Brenly pull out? Another Cubs Blog has a theory: Brenly "isn't going to waste his time managing a rebuilding team." That's a little pessimistic, but maybe....

Thinking the Unthinkable
Could Guillen Really Come to Wrigley?
With Bob Brenly out of the picture, another name has come into the picture: Ozzie Guillen. The Sox manager is on the outs on the South Side, so people are speculating he could end up at Wrigley Field. His take: Sure, why not? "My position was I would never sign another place and leave the White Sox for the Cubs because of the respect for Jerry. But if Jerry is leaving me? I'm not leaving them, they are leaving me. Then, I have a choice to make." That couldn't happen... could it?

Blog: Quade May Not Be the Savior
Over the last month or so, Mike Quade has gone from "Who's that funny-lookin' guy?" to "Maybe he's The One!" But Bleacher Report urges us to all take a deep breath and stop slobbering over the guy. The blog says the team was so far out of contention when he started there was no pressure on the team. Also, while Quade gets some kudos for benching Starlin Castro for mental errors, "I would be far more impressed if he called out a veteran in the media," the blog says, specifically mentioning Aramis Ramirez and Alfonso Soriano.

No Knock on Wood
Kerry Loves Yankees, But Could He Come Back?
FOX's Ken Rosenthal interviews Kerry Wood, and our first thought: "Is Rosenthal three feet tall?" Secondly, we're amazed at Wood's answer when asked the differences between Cubs and Yankees. "A lot of similarities, actually," he says. (Yes, except for our 102-season World Series drought, they're practically identical.) And could Wood return to the Cubs? Cubbies Crib notes there might be some room in the bullpen — especially if Marmol is traded. We loved Wood, but isn't it time to move on with our lives?

Cubbies Crib: Could Kid K come back to the Cubs?

Carlos Marmol struck out the side in the ninth inning, setting a franchise record for a reliever with 131 strikeouts... Starlin Castro went 1-for-4 and once again has enough at-bats to rank #7 among the NL batting leaders... Marlon Byrd is day-to-day with a swollen and bruised face after he was hit by a foul ball in a freak accident at the plate on Friday... The Cubs surpassed three million in attendance for the seventh consecutive year... When the Reds clinch this week, this will be the first time since 1999 that neither the Cubs or Cardinals will make it to the playoffs.

"The final game of the season at Wrigley Field makes me... happy, because I know the Blackhawks season starts in two weeks."
